Finally got down to the core.
JVC has an agressive Digital Rights Management system for CGMS and other Copy Protection bits.
When they are detected the captured video is written to the disk in PES Encrypted format tied to the recorder.
This is where we stop.
But!
If no Copy Protect signal is detected the PES Encryption is disabled and the MPEG2 data is written unencrypted to the HDD.
The effect is for recordings made from sources that asserted Copy Protection, that is already PES scrambled it can be extracted but the results have periodic Macroblock "MacroVision" like protection.
They still play back perfectly on the DVR Recorder itself it decrypts them.
But once extracted on a computer or other device the PES Encryption makes playback poor.
But!
But!!
For any new recordings lacking a Copy Protection signal the MPEG2 is perfect and can be extracted and played back on any device.
So many use cases.
If the signal was from a cable provider often the CGMS bit was always set and all the recordings are scrambled and tied to the device.
If the signal was OTA or in the USA many times CGMS is not set and the recordings are extractable and can be played back anywhere.
And if the source is VHS, DVD or Analog Input and it has no CGMS signal the resulting HDD file will be extractable and not tied to the device they will playback on any device.
